Carol Hickman Obituary

Carol Jean Ferris was born to Harold and Florence Ferris on May 31, 1933 at Mercy hospital in Denver Colorado. She arrived safely into Heaven February 5, 2021 at the age of 87. Carol grew up in Englewood, Colorado and attended Lowell Elementary, Flood Junior High and Englewood High School, graduating in 1951. While in high school she was a member of the Pep and friendship clubs and was elected Prom Queen in her senior year, this despite Carol claiming she wasn’t popular.  She attributed it to just being friendly to everyone she met.

After high school, she went to work for the Mountain Bell Telephone Company in their general accounting office. She worked there until July of 1955. Her parents and Brother Ed owned and operated a Green House in Englewood. She would work there at different parts of her life including summers as an adult.

Carol attended First Christian Church in Englewood.  While attending a Youth for Christ meeting she met her future husband John Hickman. John joined the Navy in December of 1951, they kept in contact with many letters, some of which Carol would describe as “spicy”. Their relationship culminated in John’s proposal of marriage, not on one knee but by phone. He arraigned for his Brother Frank to buy the ring and be there when he called. At the appropriate moment Frank slid the ring onto her finger. They were married on February 18, 1954, and were together just shy of 63 years, when John passed in 2017.

They were blessed with three children, Mike, Dana and Susan, four grandchildren, Heidi, Amy, John and Chris, and seven great grandchildren.

Carol was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, whose life was dedicated in service to her family. She saw to it the family gathered for every birthday, holiday and special event throughout the year. With every gathering you could always count on lots of love, laughter and especially food. So much so that Thanksgiving and Christmas became two day events. Her daily ritual included rising early to make breakfast for her husband. Her meals were legendary to her family; her family especially misses her pancakes, vegetable soup, mashed potatoes and Turkey at Thanksgiving.

During her life she enjoyed crafting, baking cookies and decorating the house for the holidays. The decorations included a large goose that had different outfits for each holiday.  After her kids would go sledding on cold winter days, she always had a cup hot chocolate waiting. Their home was always a welcome place for all who entered.

John and Carol were proud members of the Wedding Ring class at First Christian Church, now known as Englewood Bible Church. She taught Sunday school, Bible School, was Chairman of the deaconess and helped prepare church dinners. They enjoyed their fellowship and many friends there and attended as long as they could. Loving and serving the Lord was one of the most important parts of her life.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband John, her parents, her Brother Ed and her Brother and sister in law Frank and Adele Hickman and their dog Lacy.

She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and her sister in-law Marjorie Greiner.

A memorial will be planned at a later date.
