Avis Berke Petersen, 101, of Denver, Colorado passed away on April 25, 2022.
Avis was born November 14, 1920 to Martin C. Bjerke and Mabel Aamodt Bjerke in Denver, Colorado.
Avis was the oldest of 5 children and was preceded in death by her parents and younger siblings, Edna (Eddie Lou) Berke Wolfe, Robert (Bob) E. Berke, and Doris Berke Hoyt and is survived by her youngest sister Marjorie (Marji) Berke Peters, 88, of Fresno, California.
After graduating from Denver North High School in 1938, Avis received a Bonfils scholarship to the University of Denver and graduated with a double major in Music Performance and Chemistry. She entered the Navy Waves in 1942 and became an instructor in Celestial Navigation to teach pilots in WWII to fly in a flight simulator (Link Trainer). After the war, Avis married Raymond L. Petersen of Denver whom she met square dancing.
Raymond passed away shortly after the couple's 50th anniversary in 1996. Avis moved from her house to assisted living in 2017 and celebrated her 100th and 101st birthdays while in hospice care.
Avis is survived by her 5 children, Lloyd R. Petersen and Glenn D. Petersen of Littleton, CO, Roy D. Petersen of Seattle, WA, D. Scott Petersen of Orlando, FL, and Diane C. Farazandeh of Aurora, CO; her 17 grandchildren; her 19 great grandchildren; and Avis’ sister-in-law, Fayth Anne Petersen Jorgensen, 96, of Littleton. CO.
A memorial Service will be held at 2 pm on May 21, 2022 at Fellowship Community Church, 6263 S. Parker Road, Centennial, CO 80016.
