Alvin Lee Herbel

Alvin Lee Herbel age 83, passed away on Tuesday May 7th at Porter Adventist Hospital in Denver, Colorado due to complications from sepsis.  He was born on June 2, 1935 along with his twin brother to Alvin and Mollie (Schneider) Herbel in Greeley, Colorado.  He was the oldest of four sons.  He lived his early years in Greeley where they would travel around with their father and mother during harvest season as his father drove a combine during the wheat harvest.  About the time he started elementary school, the family moved to Denver.  He attended Asbury elementary school, Grant middle school and graduated from South High school in 1954.  After high school, he worked for Samsonite luggage company and then became an owner/operator of 18 wheeled tractor trailers and dump trucks.  He worked for Rio Grande company and a few other companies during his truck driving career.  In his later career, he worked as a warehouse manager for electrical companies.  

     He married M. Sharon Dahl in August 1960 and remained married for almost 59 years. They had two children Brian Herbel of Lincoln, Nebraska and Rhonda Herbel Linser of Littleton, Colorado.  He had four grandchildren Benjamin Herbel, Elijah Herbel, Kaylynn Linser, and Lillianne Herbel.

     Alvin loved all things cars and trucks and found many hours of joy working on and driving his “1923 Model T Ford”.  He enjoyed his bowling leagues and bowled a 300 game once in 1968 when that was still a rare occurrence.  He took great pride in keeping his yard, house and gardens in meticulous shape.   

     Alvin was preceded in death by his parents Alvin and Mollie.  He is survived in death by his wife Sharon, son Brian and daughter Rhonda and son-in-law John Linser, and his four grandchildren.  He is also survived by his twin brother Melvin Herbel, and his younger brothers Donald Herbel and James Herbel.  

     He will be remembered as a man with a tough exterior but a tender heart especially when it came to children and animals.  He was a favorite uncle of many of his nieces and nephews.  He had an infectious smile and laugh that would quickly make a friend from a stranger.  He would help someone in need anytime he could.  He valued a good education and hard work.  He will be remembered as the man with the “cool old car in the garage” and the “perfect yard” and “the beautiful Christmas lights” that many people admired from the windows of Porter Adventist Hospital.  

      A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Bullock Mortuary at 1375 E Hampden Avenue Englewood, Colorado 80113. 

      The Herbel family would like to express their gratitude to the Nurses, Physicians, and all the other staff at Porter Adventist Hospital Intensive Care Unit that helped take care of our husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend.  We truly appreciate all the tender care you showed him and us during this difficult time.  

     We missed you before you were even gone from our lives, we will remember you for the rest of ours,  and we will love you forever!  Rest In Peace in the arms of Jesus after your hard fought battle.  We anxiously look forward to the day that we will see you again.  Sleep well now and we will “see you later alligator.”
